Major Atom AA Girls Grab Silver in Markham

After an opening game loss to a strong East York team, the Spirits stormed back to win the silver medal by defeating Nepean, York South, and finally, Barrie Royals in an overtime thriller. The Belleville Spirits Major Atom girls (U12) competed in their 2nd Basketball Ontario sanctioned tournament ; a 4 game round robin in Markham this past weekend going 3 and 1 and winning their 2nd Silver medal in as many tournaments. The girls started slow and were over-matched in their first game losing to the eventual Gold Medal winners, East York. The team regrouped and easily defeated eastern rivals Nepean Blue Devils.47-17. Vanessa Gauthier led with 12points, Kayla Martindale (9) and Vanessa Edgett (8). The girls followed that up with another impressive showing against York South Silver Knights, winning 40-23. Martindale led with 17 and Samantha Middleton with (8). In the Silver Medal game, the girls triumphed with a thrilling 47-42 OT victory over a very good shooting Barrie Royals team. The team was again led by Martindale with 13 and Ashton McGuire with (9). Martindale and McGuire were co-MVPs for the tournament. Double Silver for Spirits

The Spirits major atom AA and major bantam AA teams both won silver medals this weekend at our own tournament. The atom A and bantam A teams also competed in the Spirits Classic. Congratulations to all teams! Here is the complete list of scores. Major Atom AA 27 – 5 over Kingston, 33 – 16 over Brockville, 35 – 18 over Gloucester, followed by a final game loss to Gloucester by a score of 33 – 28 Major Atom A losses to County Clippers by a score of 18 to 10, to Ottawa South by a score of 35 to 10 and a second game also by a score of 35 to 10. The team’s only win came in overtime against the County, 22 to 21. Major Bantam AA 42 to 12 over Brockville, 26 – 22 over Goulbourn, 24 – 15 over I.E.M. Scarborough, followed by a final game loss to Kingston, 33 to 26. It took overtime but the Blues completed an undefeated season by beating the Mustangs in overtime to win the atom championship. In the bantam final, the Bulls came out on top with a win over an under-staffed Magic team. Congratulations to all teams for a great season. The novice division finished with a 6 team festival.
