Major Bantam AA Girls Win Silver in Kingston

The Belleville Spirits major bantam girls came up a bit short in their bid for 3 straight tournament golds this past weekend at the Kingston Impact Mega tournament.   Having went 3-0 in pool play, the Spirits lost in the final to the host Kingston team 43-30. Belleville led most of the first half thanks to some hot shooting but gave up a 7-0 run to the Impact at the end of the second quarter.  Tied at 21 going into the half, Belleville fell behind in the third quarter and could not recover.  Grace Callahan led the scoring attack with 10 points with Melina McLellan and Brigid Bechervaise each scoring 9. Belleville opened the tournament with a convincing win over the Orillia Lakers 47-26.   A great way to start the weekend with all Spirits players hitting the score sheet.  This was big win for the girls as Orillia is sitting higher in the provincial rankings. Callahan and Bechervaise led the scoring with 15 and 8 respectively.  McLellan added 6 and Talia Vreugendhill and Kira Fair each with 4. Game 2 of pool play saw Belleville match up with the Dawson Bluehounds, the #2 ranked bantam team in Quebec.  Belleville never trailed in the game after jumping out to an early 8-0 thanks to some impressive shooting from Bechervaise.  The lead was pushed to as many as 14 in the first...

Atom AA Girls Shine in Hamilton

The Spirit girls went 3 and 2 in a Division 1 tournament in Hamilton, winning the 1B bracket Gold medal! Game 1:  Spirits surprised the #6 currently ranked team in the province Windsor Valiants with a strong defensive effort on route to a well deserved 26-23 win.      Kayla Martindale led the team with 14 points.  Samantha Middleton pitched in with 4. Game 2:  Spirits had their chances with the eventual tournament champions, Stoney Creek (#8 ranked team) losing 32-20.  We played them tough and could have won if we had finished a bit better.  Martindale with 7 and Middleton with 4. Game 3:  Spirit lost to #15 Huron Lakes 39-28.  It was a disappointing lose as this was the only game we didn’t play well.  Huron jumped on us early and we couldn’t close the gap.  Martindale with 10, Middleton with 6 and Madelyn Bardell with 5. Game 4:  Spirits re-grouped and defeated the host team Blessed Sacrament (#12 ranked team) 32-29.  It was a well-deserved victory that was close only due to some foul trouble we ran into. Martindale with 9, followed by Vanessa Edgett with 6, Madison Lees, Vanessa Gauthier and Lily Haslett with 4 each. Game 5:  The Spirits finished in a 3-way tie for 2nd in the tournament and were matched up with a return date with Huron Lakes for 1B Gold medal game (actually...
