It’s lucky 13 for the atom girls Belleville Spirits basketball team.

The local hoopsters competed in Division 2 of the recent Ontario Cup, going into the tournament as the No. 14-ranked team in a field of 70.

Spirits went 2-and-2, moving up one spot to finish 13th in the province to achieve the highest ranking in the history of the Spirits.

Spirits opened the tourney with consecutive losses, rallying to finish with two straight wins.

Mississauga 35, Spirits 20

Belleville opened the competition with a 15-point loss to No. 10 Mississauga but trailed by only four prior to a late run by the winners. Kayla Martindale (14) was top point-producer for the Spirits; Ashton McGuire and Ryan Fitzgerald had two apiece.

Durham 23, Spirits 19

Belleville dropped a four-point decision to the eventual gold medalists, outplaying higher-ranked Durham but coming up short in the shooting department. Martindale (8) and Vanessa Edgett (4) led local scoring.

Spirits 34, Brantford 25

Spirits played another solid game against a higher-seed (No. 9), this time coming out on top. Martindale (14), McGuire (9) and Edgett (4) were top snipers for Belleville.

Spirits 31, Tecumseh 17

Belleville drubbed lower-ranked Tecumseh (No. 15), getting nine points from Martindale while Samantha Middleton chipped in with seven. McGuire had five.

Spirits finish the 2016-17 OBA season with 21 wins and seven losses, plus two gold medals and a pair of silvers in tournament play.
