The Spirit girls went 3 and 2 in a Division 1 tournament in Hamilton, winning the 1B bracket Gold medal!

Game 1:  Spirits surprised the #6 currently ranked team in the province Windsor Valiants with a strong defensive effort on route to a well deserved 26-23 win.      Kayla Martindale led the team with 14 points.  Samantha Middleton pitched in with 4.

Game 2:  Spirits had their chances with the eventual tournament champions, Stoney Creek (#8 ranked team) losing 32-20.  We played them tough and could have won if we had finished a bit better.  Martindale with 7 and Middleton with 4.

Game 3:  Spirit lost to #15 Huron Lakes 39-28.  It was a disappointing lose as this was the only game we didn’t play well.  Huron jumped on us early and we couldn’t close the gap.  Martindale with 10, Middleton with 6 and Madelyn Bardell with 5.

Game 4:  Spirits re-grouped and defeated the host team Blessed Sacrament (#12 ranked team) 32-29.  It was a well-deserved victory that was close only due to some foul trouble we ran into. Martindale with 9, followed by Vanessa Edgett with 6, Madison Lees, Vanessa Gauthier and Lily Haslett with 4 each.

Game 5:  The Spirits finished in a 3-way tie for 2nd in the tournament and were matched up with a return date with Huron Lakes for 1B Gold medal game (actually playing for 3rd place in the tournament) based on point differential.  In a much different game, the girls adjusted and dominated the Huron Lakers, going up 20-4 and eventually winning 36-25.  Middleton with 13, Martindale with 11 and Lees with 5 led the team.

An impressive effort by all 12 girls.  The Spirits are currently ranked 18th and look forward to moving up in the final rankings after a successful tournament against some of the best teams and players in the province.  Next on tap will be a number of tri-meets culminating with the Ontario Cup in late March.
