The U12 AA girls attended the Gloucester tournament this past weekend going 5 and 0 on route to winning the AA/AAA pool Gold Medal laying claim to being the ‘Beasts of the East’ for the 2nd straight year!
Good teams find ways to win when they’re not at their best and are confident in their abilities to come back from behind which we did 3 time over the weekend.
Game 1: The girls jumped to an early 9-0 lead against West Lake and defended well the entire game on route to a 28-12 win over their opponents from Montreal. Kayla Martindale led with 8 points, player of the game Madison Lees with 6 and Vanessa Gauthier and Samantha Middleton pitched in with 4 each.
Game 2: The girls followed that up with a total team effort; impressive and dominant performance defeating Ottawa Shooting Stars 41-11. Martindale led the team with 14 points, Middleton with 6, Marlee Maracle and Sarah Paul with 4 each.
Game 3: The girls started slow in Game 3 against a stubborn Goulborne team and had to come from behind before winning going away 47-25. Kayla Martindale literally took the game over and scored 22 points sparking the rest of the team. Vanessa Edgett pitched in with 6 while Lees, Gauthier, Lily Haslett and Maracle with 4 each.
Game 4: In the semi-finals, the girls played against a very tough Brockville team and eventually came back won a close game 30-23. Martindale again led with 10, Haslett with 5 and player of the game Madelyn Bardell with 3.
Game 5: In a very exciting final, the girls got payback against the host team Gloucester Wolverines who defeated us for the Gold Medal in our own host tournament back in November, winning 27-20. This was an impressive comeback effort by the girls considering we were down 10-2 at half-time. I don’t ever remember only scoring 2 points in one half of basketball, but the girls were creating chances and just not getting anything to drop in. They persevered, stuck with the game plan and eventually came on top in a very exciting game played by 2 good teams. Kayla again led with 9 points, Sam Middleton and Vanessa Gauthier with 6 each. Edgett pitched in with another 4. Kayla was picked by the other team’s coaches as game MVP and finished an impressive weekend with 63 points!
The girls are now 11-2 in their 3 tournaments winning 2 silver and 1 Gold. They now go to Hamilton to play in the AAA pool against some of the strongest teams in the province this coming weekend. We are all looking forward to the challenge.
The team is represented by Kayla Martindale, Madelyn Bardell, Lily Haslett, Marlee Maracle, Madison Lees, Sophie Profit, Ryan Fitzgerald, Vanessa Gauthier, Samantha Middleton, Vanessa Edgett, Sarah Paul and Ashton McGuire.
